英國國會下議院選舉7日投票，8日揭曉結果。雖然選前民調顯示執政黨保守黨與最大在野黨工黨難分高下，但開票結果卻是保守黨以顯著差距勝出，甚至可以單獨執政。保守黨黨魁、現任首相卡麥隆（David Cameron）表示，該黨表現可圈可點，未來幾天就會組成新政府。

卡麥隆在英國當地時間凌晨5時發表演說，表示新一屆保守黨政府將是每一位國民的政府；她也對去年爭取獨立失敗的蘇格蘭承諾，會儘快進行權力下放，以確保聯合王國的完整。蘇獨運動主要推手蘇格蘭民族黨（SNP）人氣高漲，這次幾乎囊括蘇格蘭地區所有的國會議席。

英國下議院全院650席，根據英國廣播公司（BBC）預測，保守黨可望拿下329席，較上屆增加27席，而且過半；工黨僅得到234席，較上屆倒退22席；SNP拿下56席，較上屆大躍進50席。自由民主黨（Liberal Democrat）只剩8席，是上屆56席的1/7；極右派的英國獨立黨（UKIP）雖然選前來勢洶洶，但只拿到1席，領導人法拉吉（Nigel Farage）甚至落選。
